The common cold is something that nearly all kids experience. Rarely does the cold lead to more than a few days of a runny nose or a cough. But for Matis Carriere, his cold was the sign of something far more serious.
At just 9-years-old, Matis was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Group A Streptococcus in May 2019. This disease can impact people in a variety of ways but in Matis’ case, it materialized into necrotizing fasciitis, commonly referred to as a flesh-eating disease.
Matis has been in the hospital since his diagnosis in May and has received several surgeries on his feet, knees, and arms to remove the infected areas. He’s currently at Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital recovering and learning how to walk again. It’s been a gruelling battle for Matis and his family. Matis’ parents, Eric and Julie commute from outside of Edmonton each day to visit while spending the remainder of their time with Matis’ three siblings. But through it all, the Carriere family has still found reasons to smile every day.
Lisa Last Mortgage Broker/Quantus Mortgage Solutions visited the family to deliver the cheque. “Matis was so energetic and sweet despite all the hospital time and surgeries. The family was so lovely and they smiled through our entire meeting despite everything they have faced over the past couple of months.” Matis will be at Glenrose for one more month before he can go home.
We are so honoured to play a small part in getting the Carriere family back on their feet again. Thank you to all who donated to make this possible!
